Tian'anmen Gate
天安门

The Gate of Heavenly Peace serves as a reviewing stand and backdrop for celebrations of great events. Most recently, the People's Republic of China celebrated its 60th anniversary with a parade and aa series of speeches. Guests were seated on Tian'anmen Square.

After the founding of the Republic in 1911, the portrait of Sun Yat-sen hung where Mao's hangs now. In 1949, recognizing the symbolic nature of the gate, Mao Zedong stood upon the gate while his troops entered Tian'anmen Square through Zhangyangmen from the south. It was here that the announcement of the founding of the People's Republic of China was made.
