West Gate of Righteousness 右义门

The roof decorations on the West Gate of Righteousness 右义门 (Yòu Yì Mén) indicate that this is a moderately important building - mostly because of its position near the Hall of Supreme Harmony. All of the buildings around the Sea of Flagstones in front of the Hall of Supreme Harmony are decorated with the greatest care to complement and enhance the setting. This area was the most important within the Forbidden City for official and religious rites. Other buildings that have five beast figures include subsidiary palaces on the west side of the Forbidden City, those inhabited by concubines and members of the extended family. There are always an odd number of beasts. We will see that there are nine plus one on the roof-ridges of the Hall of Supreme Harmony.
