Forbidden City
Gold Filigree Sachet

Perfumes or the petals of dried flowers would be carried in this sachet of gold filigree made during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). One of the functions of perfumes all over the world was to mask unpleasant odors. I always carry an image of a grand ball at Versailles with everyone dressed in those heavy clothes dancing on a warm summer's night without modern deodorant. Thinking of the smell tends to put things in perspective.
