Ding Decorated with Ogre Mask
饕餮纹鼎    烹饪器

This cooking pot, or ding, has an ogre mask design. The ogre mask was and is a common design in bronze age art. It takes many forms and is a general pattern rather than symbolic of a particular god or supernatural creature. Ogres guard against evil spirits. It was made during the Shang Dynasty period (16th to the 11th century BC) and was excavated at Taoxia Village, Huaxian County.
