Western Zhou Dynasty
Roof Tile End Piece
重环纹瓦当   建筑材料

This roof tile fit on the end of the roof and has a double circle design. Tiles such as these were placed over two adjacent flat tiles. They were used to protect and ornament traditional Chinese houses. They are called wadang and this is the oldest one found to date. You can't tell it from this picture, but the tile is quite deep, almost as deep as it is wide. It dates to the Western Zhou Dynasty (1027 - 771 BC). It was found at a dig in Zhouyuan, Fufeng County.
