Gilded Statue of Maitreya

This gilded statue of Maitreya was made during the Northern Wei Period (386 to about 534). Maitreya is the predicted form of a successor to Buddha coming to earth to teach and enlighten. Maitreya is seated on a throne with legs crossed at the ankles. He looks down observing and waiting for his time.
