Gold Mankara Dish

This gold dish has four lobes and is engaved with designs that include the Makara. The Makara is a mythical beast that combines the fish and dragon characteristics in China. The symbol originated in India as part of Buddhism and was brought to China with traders and religious items. Gradually it was adapted to the Chinese myth structure. The bowl was found when excavating Taiyi Road in Xi'an City in 1983.
