Song Dynasty
Kowtowing Pottery Figure - Funerary Object

This official is shown kowtowing either to a higher official or to the emperor. The kowtow was used as part of the ritual of filial piety in many circumstances. For instance, during a marriage ceremony, the couple would kowtow three times to the husband's father. The figure was used as a burial object during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 AD).
