Ming Dynasty
Square Ding with Ogre Mask Design

This Ding has four legs. They commonly have three legs, but four legged examples have been found back to ancient China. When it has four legs it is called a fangding 方鼎, "square ding". The glaze includes five colors, an advance over the three colors found in the Tang Dynasty. Ogre is a translation of 饕餮 (tāotiè), a vicious mythical monster in Chinese tradition. This example was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1664) and was excavated in Suide County. There is another view on the next page.
