Shaanxi village

Shaanxi Loess Plateau

The Wei River brought cultural diversity to the area around Xi'an and then to the rest of China as traders and explorers traveled the Silk Road. Contacts between East and West were sporadic until centralized government under the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD) formalized and supported trade. China imported diverse agricultural products, flowers, art designs, religions, and philosophies and exported silk, arts, and gold.
