Shaanxi Loess Plateau

Tombs can be seen in the distance just on the edge of the fields. In this case, you can also see the mountains that served as a protection for the Wei River Valley from the Neolithic Age. You can just see that the lower parts of the mountains are terraced into fields to extend the yield. The mountains as well as the fields are covered with loess and are quite fertile. Terracing was not practiced extensively until the 1960's when the famines and population explosion made innovation necessary.
