The Jingyun bell has an hexagon shape. Each of the segments has a plaque area, most contain pictures of animals such as the dragon, phoenix, ox, and lion. On one side there is an inscription written by and in the calligraphy of the Tang Emperor Ruizong 唐睿宗 (Táng​ Ruì​zōng​). In eighteen lines containing 293 characters he described the ideals of Daoism, its mysteries, and the path. He also praised the bell.
