Comment: Into is always a preposition. It can mean: 1) in the direction, toward; 2) to indicate a time period - into the next year; 3) against an obstacle; 4) change location to be surrounded by something - indicating you were outside and are now inside - into the classroom; 5) to indicate entering a state or condition - got into a mess; 6) an avid interest in something - into stamps, into hard drugs, into his studies; 7) enter an occupation - go into engineering; 8) in mathematics to indicate the direction of division - divide 4 into 12. Into is most commonly confused with in. In many cases they are equivalent, but there are differences. We can say: "She fell into the water", or "She fell in the water" because the context implies that she was outside of the water and then entered it. But "She fell into the sand" and "She fell in the sand." have different meanings. In the second sentence, the sand made her fall. Here's another one. "The child came into the classroom." or "The child came in the classroom." It is understood that the child was outside the classroom and came inside. But if you change "He should take the books into the classroom." to "He should take the books in the classroom." it means that there books in the classroom and that he should take them away!
